When her marriage falls apart in 1976, Agnes moves in with her mother Renee who owns a casino in Nice that the mob would like to control. Agnes falls in love with Renée's business adviser Maurice, and when he fails to get the promotion he wanted, he uses old resentments to turn Agnes against her mother, hoping to take over the casino. When she is offered 3 million francs to vote against her mother in the shareholder's meeting, Agnes accepts the offer and Renee loses control of the casino. But Agnes regrets her betrayal and Maurice distances himself from her. A year later she attempts suicide and then disappears. Thirty years later, Maurice remains the prime suspect in a murder case with no body and no proof of his guilt.
