It’s Not Ogre Yet! DreamWorks To Revive ‘Shrek’ Franchise

DreamWorks Animation is currently being acquired by NBCUniversal, and the company recently announced plans to bring us more of our favorite ogre. Here is everything we know about the future of this franchise which won an academy award for best animated feature.

Dreamworks had success with the Shrek series

It’s been six years since the last Shrek film, Shrek Forever Afterhit theaters, but NBCUniversal announced that it plans to revive the franchise. Former CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg formerly oversaw the Shrek franchise. Speaking to investors, NBCUniversal chief Steve Burk said he plans to partner with Illumination Entertainment in order to find a place for the friendly, green monster within their company.

 “[Chris Meledandri, Illumination founder and CEO] is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises,” he said.

According to DeadlineNCBUniversal hopes to produce “as many as four animated movies a year” and will focus on creating characters that can fair well as the face of theme park attractions and sell licenced merchandise to take “the low-single digit returns of the movie business and turn it into a different kind of business.”

There’s no word on how many of these estimated four movies a year will feature Shrekbut it’s undeniable that the franchise is a money-making behemoth. The Shrek films have grossed over $1.4 billion in the box office since their inception, and Illumination Entertainment already has a proven track record of success with the Despicable Me series. Let’s just hope the minions don’t interfere too much with this one.

When Lord Farquad removes all the creatures from their homes, they seek comfort Shrek’s swamp. Annoyed that he is no longer alone, he strikes a deal with the ruler: save Princess Fiona from her tower and he’ll get his swamp back. However, plans change when Shrek and Fiona begin to fall for each other. Simultaneously, Fiona is hiding a big secret.

You can watch the fun musical on Netflix. Filled with catch songs, crazy dance numbers, and gorgeous costumes, you’ll feel like you’re right there in the fairytale.
