Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst Fall Head Over Heels in Terrific ‘Upside Down’ Trailer

The new trailer for the long-awaited Juan Diego Solanas film Upside Down might tread a bit into heavy-handed territory, but is foremost a promising window into a dreamy, magical and creative love story. Here’s the reality of the universe that encompasses stars Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst: Adam (Sturgess) lives in a world not too dissimilar from our own, save for the heightened presence of a tyrannical and xenophobic militant police organization. Also, there’s the small difference that directly above Adam’s world, there is another “upside down” world in which Eve (Dunst) lives. It’s not particularly easy to explain, but the preview does a very good job of depicting it clearly.

More than anything else, Solanas gives us an imaginative take on the age-old forbidden lovers story. Each world holds the other in terrified contempt, and will not stand for their civilians interacting with those from above/below. The forces of society (and gravity) keep Adam and Eve apart, but this duo—stricken with a lifelong love for one another—are compelled to find one another.

Staff editor Michael Arbeiter’s natural state of being can best be described as “mild panic attack.” His earliest memories of growing up in Queens, New York, involve nighttime conversations with a voice from his bedroom wall (the jury’s still out on what that was all about) and a love for classic television that spawned from the very first time he was allowed to watch “The Munsters.” Attending college at SUNY Binghamton, a 20-year-old Michael learned two things: that he could center his future on this love for TV and movies, and that dragons never actually existed — he was kind of late in the game on that one.
