Johansson to Star as Mary, Queen of Scots

Actress Scarlett Johansson will star as tragic monarch, Mary, Queen of Scots in a new movie.

The Lost In Translation star, 22, will take the lead in director James Curran’s Mary, Queen of Scots – an historical epic about the 16th century Catholic ruler, who was beheaded at the age of 42 for attempting to take over the English throne from her Protestant cousin, Elizabeth I.

The project was revealed on Thursday by production company Relativity Media at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where it was announced the movie will see Mary “battle political enemies, scheming allies, and affairs of the heart in her quest to reunite the warring tribes of her native Scotland”.

The script will be written by Jimmy McGovern and British newspaper The Sun claims Johansson’s mother, Melanie, will serve as co-producer.
