John Carpenter to team with Blumhouse for ‘The Thing’ reboot

John Carpenter is rebooting yet another one of his horror classics with a revived version of his 1982 hit The Thing.

The Halloween director announced the project during a panel at the Fantasia International Film Festival last week (August 21, 2020), and now Variety has confirmed the news.

Carpenter was discussing the upcoming film Halloween Kills, the follow up to the 2018 reboot of Halloween, when he surprised fans by revealing he was attached to a retelling of The Thing along with Blumhouse productions chief Jason Blum, who also produced the Halloween reboot, featuring original star Jamie Lee Curtis.

“I think he’s going to be working on The Thing, rebooting The Thing. I’m involved with that, maybe,” Carpenter said.

It isn’t clear if the project will be a prequel, sequel, or remake of the story, which follows an Antarctic research team picked off by a horrifying alien life force.

Inspired by the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr., the chiller also inspired the 1951 film The Thing From Another World and a 2011 prequel.

Meanwhile, Halloween Kills, directed by David Gordon Green, has been pushed to October 15, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
