Johnny Depp Reteams with ‘Secret Window’ Director… But for a Comedy

Credit: Columbia Pictures

Fresh off his Lone Ranger flop, Johnny Depp is turning toward a smaller, less franchisey project. According to Indiewire, the actor is set to reteam with his Secret Window director David Koepp for a movie called Mortdecai. Given the film’s title and the duo’s previous work, you would think that Mortdecai will be another goosebump-inducing psychological thriller. But you would be wrong. Mortdecai is actually a comedy crime flick about a handsome art dealer on a treasure hunt for a stolen painting that might contain the secret code to a vault of Nazi gold. So it’s kind of like National Treasure, with a dash of Inglourious Basterds and The Da Vinci Code.

Mortdecai is based on The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, the final novel in a critically acclaimed series of books by British author Kyril Bonfiglioli. Bonfiglioli passed away before the book was completed, so satirist Craig Brown finished the job. Right now, it seems that Depp wants to fit the movie shoot between his work on Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods adaptation and the newest Pirates of the Caribbean installment. Koepp’s last project was the highly successful action-thriller Premium Rush, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon. Both Premium Rush and Secret Window were quite a wild ride, so we’re looking forward to seeing what Koepp does in the realm of comedy. And seeing Depp as a cultured, debonair art dealer of course.
