Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks To Join Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Sleeping Dogs’

ALT TEXTAin’t it amazing what winning one measly little Oscar can do for your career?

The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow is preparing to shoot her next film, Sleeping Dogs (formerly Triple Frontier), and after getting Tom Hanks’ attention yesterday, it’s rumored she landed another Hollywood A-lister: Johnny Depp.

Written by Hurt Locker-scribe Mark Boal, Dogs centers on organized crime in South America — focusing on the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Reports say there are five main roles in the film and Hank and Depp’s characters are considered the two major parts.

There’s one little problem right now with this casting news. Depp is scheduled to start shooting his next film, Dark Shadows, with director Tim Burton (imagine that?) in February — the same the time that Bigelow’s film is supposed to start. Hopefully they’ll be able to figure that out, because the idea of Depp and Hanks working together in the same film is really exciting.

The two have never shared a frame before, so it will be interesting to see how their styles mesh. Depp’s obviously known for his creation of strange and oddball characters, while Hanks tends to be more grounded and distinguished in his roles. So will it work? Maybe. Plus, we saw Bigelow’s talent at creating and analyzing one characters journey in The Hurt Locker, so how will she handle an ensemble cast? Especially one with the likes of Depp and Hanks? I guess we’ll have to wait to see, but I have high hopes that it will be awesome. What do you think?
