Warner Bros. finally saw superhero-flavored success with Christopher Nolan’s Batman flicks and it looks like the studio hopes to continue that momentum. Beyond this summer’s Green Lantern, the in-the-works final chapter of Nolan’s Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises, and Zack Snyder’s Superman, top Warners exec Jeff Robinov says we can look forward to a lot more capes, masks and spandex in the next few years.
At the top of his priorities is getting a Justice League flick off the ground for 2013. He’s so ready to get moving on this project that not only is a script for a Justice League movie already in the works, but he says they’ve got two spin-offs — Wonder Woman and The Flash — already in the works as well. Perhaps with the success of Nolan’s deeper, darker superhero movies (the only profitable set of superhero movies at Warners in recent years) we may see that shift in Warners’ future hero-fueled films as well. Add to that the fact that the studio is also producing NBC’s new Wonder Woman series and it seems that they’d have to take an entirely different tone to make the films stand out. Robinov tells the LA Times that we needn’t worry about the possible over-saturation effect with a Wonder Woman TV show and her likely appearance on the big screen, citing the fact that Superman Returns came out while Smallville was on TV. Okay, except that Superman Returns was a giant flop. Risk, not averted. What else have you got?
Well, it also turns out that Warners isn’t ready to let go of Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter ego because even after Nolan steps back, Robinov hopes to continue making Batman movies. Okay, we know they’re never going to stop making Batman movies. He’s just too good of a hero. The Michael Keaton films were great, the Nolan films are fantastic and the Clooney/Kilmer era was tolerable and fun so we’ll let it slide. The good news is that even though Nolan will step out creatively, it looks like he’ll still act as a producer — at least that’s what Robinov says.
Taking on the Justice League is quite a challenge, but if Warners can pull it off they may be able to see their superhero-heavy slate see some super success.
