Justin Timberlake Will Play Music Icon Neil Bogart in ‘Spinning Gold’ Biopic

Justin TimberlakeEveryone wants Justin Timberlake to start singing again. But as long as he insists on acting, at least he’s playing to a strength we’ve seen before (albeit on a smaller scale): biopic acting.

Timberlake will be accepting the role of the late Neil Bogart in the rags-to-riches biopic about the young man’s rise to prominence in the music industry as co-founder of Casablanca Records. The film, entitled Spinning Gold, is written by Bogart’s son Timothy Scott.

Now, only an actor would be able to tell you if the craft of capturing the essence of an actual person and that of creating and embodying an entirely fictional character are inherently different. All we can say is, his best recent performance was as Napster co-creator Sean Parker in The Social Network. This, of course, isn’t counting anything on Saturday Night Live.

Timothy Scott Bogart and his brother Evan “Kidd” Bogart, himself a music publisher, met with Timberlake to solidify the decision. As Timothy told Deadline, Timberlake’s casting as his father was “the moment [he] had been waiting for 29 years.” Tim spoke further of his joy on the matter: “[Justin Timberlake] has the exact same energy as my father, the same glimmer in his eye.”

Neil Bogart and Casablanca records are notably responsible for launching the careers of a slew of stars, including Donna Summer, The Village People, and KISS.

Perhaps this foray into films about the record industry will spark a revival of Timberlake’s first passion. Maybe emulating Neil Bogart’s life and career will remind Timberlake just how magical the musical world is. And surely, no one will be disappointed to see him head back in that direction.

Production for Spinning Gold is slated to begin towards the end of 2012.
