Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler Rumored for ‘Romancing the Stone’ Remake

Katherine HeiglIn 1984, Robert Zemeckis crafted Romancing the Stone, a well-received adventure that placed a romance novelist into a wild South American adventure to rescue her kidnapped sister. It was a good time. Not exactly a life-changing or artistically dense film, but it was filled with the Zemeckis charm and an affable cast. So, all in all, it was a good piece of film reel to toss into the public conscious. But it’s not exactly something that needs to be remade. And yet…

Producer Emma Watts seems to be pushing this whole thing forward, and seeking the talents of Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler and Taylor Kitsch to lead the film (although Heigl’s publicist was unable to confirm or deny the rumor). Heigl and Butler have worked together before: some of you may recall The Ugly Truth, which stuck the pair in a romantic duet.

Of course, if this film does not carry through, it will not be the first time that a Romancing the Stone reprisal has failed. The original film was to be followed up by a sequel, reuinting the cast of Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito. Clearly, nothing amounted from that. But now, in the spirit of the Era of the Remake, they’re looking at a whole new cast, plausibly a re-imagination of the story, and, invariably, robots. At least one robot.
