Somehow Katherine Heigl has managed to become one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, despite the fact that most – if not all – of her roles seem like they’re part of the same film. Tell me this doesn’t sound familiar: Heigl is an uptight, controlling, career-oriented woman who doesn’t have time for men, or can’t find the right one, or some variation thereof. But of course it’s only a matter of time before our heroine learns an important life lesson and eventually finds love (see: The Ugly Truth, 27 Dresses, Knocked Up, etc.) Now, if you are a high-powered Hollywood executive type, how do you take this formula to the next level?
How about this: Katherine Heigl plays a woman who hasn’t aged in 100 years and hasn’t managed to find love the entire time. After a century of not finding “the one,” she finally locks down a (presumably) rakish lad that she feels comfortable aging with. Hopefully not all at once! That would be quite a shock for the young man.
This “epic romance” is called Adaline, and it is the latest from producer Sidney Kimmel, whose past projects have all been critically praised (read: not profitable) indie movies like Lars and the Real Girl and Synecdoche, New York. Clearly, Kimmel has decided to try a new strategy.
Kimmel will also be producing (again with Lakeshore Entertainment) the Heigl vehicle One for the Money, in which our plucky heroine will play bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, based on the character from author Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. The Bounty Hunter in reverse?
Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama) has signed on to direct Adaline, and Julie Anne Robinson (The Last Song with Miley Cyrus) will take One for the Money. Shooting on One for the Money has already begun, and Adaline will begin production early 2011.
