Longtime TV star and occasional film actress Kathryn Morris has landed a role in Bennett Miller’s upcoming baseball drama Moneyball, says The Hollywood Reporter. She joins Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Robin Wright and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ best-selling non-fiction book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.”
The book’s subject is Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Pitt), who assembled a contending baseball club on a shoestring budget by employing a sophisticated computer-based analysis to draft players. Morris will play Beane’s second wife (the first being Wright). The film, written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, starts shooting in Los Angeles this week. Scott Rudin and Michael De Luca are producing.
Though she’s best known for starring in CBS’ Cold Case, Morris is no stranger to cinema and will be surely comfortable amongst Moneyball’s many stars. She worked on two Steven Spielberg films (A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report), appeared in award-worthy fare like 2000’s The Contender and 1997’s As Good As It Gets as well as John Woo’s Paycheck and Rod Lurie’s acclaimed Resurrecting The Champ.
I don’t know if Morris’ casting completes the roster of the film or if there’s more to come, but I really like what I see so far. Hill is the weak link in the chain and I would’ve much rather had Demetri Martin in the role of Paul De Podesta as originally planned. If Miller can tone down his awkward, annoying humor, then I see no reason why Moneyball won’t be an Oscar contender come 2011.
