Katie Holmes Joins Adam Sandler Comedy

Jessica AlbaKatie Holmes‘ respectable acting career has been too often overshadowed by her tabloid stardom, so I’m pleased to hear that the actress is finalizing negotiations to join Adam Sandler and Al Pacino in the Happy Madison production Jack and Jill.

The comedy centers on Jack (Sandler), a family man who has to deal with his twin sister, Jill (also Sandler), who comes over for Thanksgiving and then refuses to leave.  Holmes would play Sandler’s wife and Al Pacino will play… Al Pacino.  Dennis Dugan, the mind behind such serially adequate fare as Grown Ups, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, will direct.

I don’t know what to make of that peculiar casting – Sandler playing both title roles?  Al Pacino as himself?  But at the very least it will be nice to see Holmes back in features again after 2005’s Batman Begins.  She’s an unfortunately under-appreciated actress and I think she’s capable of holding her own opposite Sandler, given the right material.  Dugan is an unremarkable pick but a safe bet for Sandler, who has seen a number of commercial successes with the director.

The Columbia Pictures comedy begins lensing in October ahead of a probable November 2011 release.
