Kristen Stewart Joins Kerouac Adaptation ‘On The Road’

If Academy Award level auteur’s like Gus Van Sant and Francis Ford Coppola can’t get a specific movie made, you know that the project is in hot water. Perhaps all that was missing from their proposed adaptations of Jack Kerouac’s timeless 1957 novel On The Road was a cast that could draw an audience, but now Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) has one.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart recently spoke with USA Today’s Susan Wloszczyna, telling her that she has joined Salles production, which aims to shoot this summer.

Says Stewart: “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in On the Road. So that’s a big deal.”

Coppola will end up producing the film, which co-stars Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund as confused drifter Dean Moriarity, husband of Stewart’s character, while British actor Sam Riley (Control) will play his traveling pal, Sal.

Whether or not the filmed version of this American literary classic will live up to it’s reputation remains to be seen, but with the talented and popular young cast and a wonderful director like Salles on board, my anticipation is now very high. To be distributed by United Artists, the film should be released some time in 2011.
