Ang Lee‘s gay romance Brokeback Mountain was hailed as the finest movie of 2005 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Saturday.
Lee was honored as Best Director for the Jake Gyllenhaal film in the reviewers’ choice—which is a strong indicator for next year’s Academy Awards.
Meanwhile, Vera Farmiga won Best Actress for her harrowing performance in Down to the Bone.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was picked as Best Actor for his role in Capote, and his co-star Catherine Keener was named Best Supporting Actress.
William Hurt took the Best Supporting Actor for his role in A History of Violence.
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s gongs will be awarded on Jan. 17.
