Lasse Hallstrom To Direct Patrick Dempsey In ‘Tom’s Dad’

ALTLasse Hallstrom, the Swedish director whose past success with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat are almost enough to make us forget about his latest sappy piece of cinema, Dear John, has signed on to direct Tom’s Dad, starring Patrick Dempsey.

The Grey’s Anatomy star will play a successful character actor and vaudeville performer in 1960s Las Vegas, who comes to a crossroads in his career when comedic tastes begin to change.  The arrival of his estranged son further complicates his life, already threatened by obsolescence.

Dempsey seems an odd choice to me, if only because he’s been so pigeonholed by his turn as Dr. Shepherd on Grey’s, but it’s about time the actor got a chance to explore his range.  Hallstrom has put out some great movies in the past, so cautious optimism is the word of the day.

Point Blank Production’s Joni Levin and Keith Clarke will produce Tom’s Dad in concert with Johnny Depp‘s Infinitum Nihil company, with a script from Martin Casella.
