Leonardo DiCaprio Shows Off His Ride in ‘Great Gatsby’ Pics

We haven’t heard much about Baz Luhrmann‘s =adaptation of The Great Gatsby since the director announced that it may be shot in 3D, but for any Fitzgerald-philes out there wondering if the production had fallen of the face of the earth, have no fear. New photos taken from the set at Fox Studios in Australia show leading men Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire out for a drive in a period-appropriate–and stylish–car. Though if I’m remembering my high school English class correctly, Gatsby’s car was supposed to be green, and green was a metaphor for money or hope or the American Dream or something like that.

The Great Gatsby, for anyone who slept through Junior year, tells the story of wealthy playboy Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) through the eyes of his friend Nick Carraway (Maguire), as Gatsby attempts to reconnect with first love Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) despite the objections of her husband (Joel Edgerton).

Without context, these photographs raise more questions about the film than they answer, in a production already full of questions. Including: why is Luhrmann using Australia as a stand-in for the original setting of Long Island? Will the movie contain that weird ambiguous sex scene from the book? And why the hell are they shooting the film in 3D? Is the symbolism going to fly off the screen into your face?

Luhrmann, for his films’ faults, has an undeniable flair for epic romance and striking imagery. Just look at Moulin Rouge and Romeo+Juliet. So while I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, this next project could also go the way of Australia.
