Synopsis

An Iranian-born 16-year-old New Jersey high school student thinks of herself as an American through and through, even preferring to be called Mary rather than her Iranian name Maryam. But the serenity of Maryam's family's integrated life is disrupted when her headstrong, fundamentalist cousin Ali arrives from Iran to attend graduate school at an American university and the American hostages are taken in Teheran. Now members of Maryam's community broad-brush all Iranians as enemies, and Maryam and her family are forced to confront prejudice and hatred from neighbors who have long welcomed them.
