Synopsis

A portrait of Maya Lin, the designer of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, the Civil Rights Memorial, and other major public works of art. It tells the gripping story of how an unknown student was able to create, against great odds and intense political opposition, stunning memorials with profound impact on the American people. The film opens with a David-and-Goliath battle that pits Maya Lin against powerful critics in a national controversy over her design of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. The story continues, set against a backdrop of KKK activities, with Maya's Civil Rights Memorial, and climaxes in the sculptural monument honoring women at Yale. The film comes full circle with a moving epilogue on the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C., attended by 100,000 Vietnam vets, including Vice President Al Gore.
