Michael Caine To ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’

Michael CaineWhenever Michael Caine boards a new project, it’s worth finding out more about. I didn’t know much about Harry Brown, but when I heard of his involvement in the noir-revenge tale I immediately investigated and was rewarded with one of the coolest films of the year. Though I wasn’t very excited about the prospect of another Journey To The Center Of The Earth, I am now as The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Caine is setting his sights on a supporting but important role in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Like it’s predecessor, Journey 2 will be shot and released in 3D and distributed by Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema. Unlike that $240 million hit, Dwayne Johnson will lead the hunt for Josh Hutcherson’s missing grandfather (to be played by Caine) on an enchanted and uncharted island. Brad Peyton will direct, filling in for Eric Brevig. The script was written by Mark and Brian Gunn and the project is being produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm along with Charlotte Huggins.

It should be a nice change of pace for Caine, who has been working on darker material for some time. From Sleuth and The Dark Knight to Flawless and The Prestige, it’s been all drama for the 77-year-old double Oscar-winner and a family adventure like Journey should bring a smile to his face – and ours – as well as a touch of class to a film that many believe is unnecessary.
