Michael Fassbender To Star In ‘Prometheus’

Michael FassbenderI wouldn’t mind being Michael Fassbender. Not only is he a handsome devil, but his future is looking brighter everyday. He’s already worked with a visual genius on Zack Snyder’s 300 and an evil genius on Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds; that’s something to be envious about. And even though his 2010 releases were significantly less stellar (Jonah Hex and Centurion – ouch), 2011 and beyond will be spectacular. This year, he appears in kick-ass flicks like Haywire and X-Men: First Class in addition to art-house fare like Jane Eyre and A Dangerous Method, but he’s just booked a huge gig that will make 2012 standout for him.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Fassbender will star in Ridley Scott’s new science fiction opus Prometheus, which is set up at 20th Century Fox. You may remember this project as the untitled Alien prequel that put many fanboy’s in a frenzy. After Damon Lindelof (Star Trek, LOST) got involved as screenwriter, however, the film took an original turn and was spun-off into a fresh idea for a brand new movie.

Fassbender flirted with the idea of joining the monster-sized production when it was still an official Alien prequel, but now he’s locked. He’ll star opposite Noomi Rapace, who took Hollywood by storm with her role as Lisbeth Salander in the original, foreign Millennium Trilogy (which Sony is currently remaking with Oscar nominee David Fincher). There are other male and female roles to cast, so I’m very interested to see who else signs up for this potentially amazing project. Scott hasn’t done sci-fi since 1982’s triumphant Blade Runner; his return to a genre he helped redefine is alone reason enough to put Prometheus on my “most anticipated of 2012” list.

Prometheus is set for a June 8th, 2010 release.
