Just yesterday, Paramount Pictures announced that Mission: Impossible IV would move from its time honored May slot to December 16th 2011, hoping to carry on the booming trend of big-budget tent poles films in the holiday movie season (think I Am Legend, Avatar, this year’s Tron: Legacy). Today, the studio confirmed that The Incredibles and Ratatouille director Brad Bird would make his live action debut as the helmer of the highly anticipated fourquel.

Bird beat out Edgar Wright for the job since the Shaun of the Dead director is still deep in post-production on this August’s comic book adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. But Tom Cruise, who has long been an admirer of the British filmmakers work, told Empire that ““I dig Edgar. Very nice guy, very smart, very talented, I’d really like to do something with him.”

On having Bird on the project, though, Cruise was very enthused. He continued on, stating that: “We’re having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?”

Though there’s a year and a half wait until the next Mission, you can see Cruise in spy mode in June’s Knight & Day, directed by James Mangold and co-starring Cameron Diaz.
