Would Ah-nuld have qualified for a real mission to Mars?
Reality TV has tortured people in almost every imaginable way on Earth already so it only makes sense that the next frontier might just be where no man has ever gone before: space…specifically Mars.
Movies like John Carter, War of the Worlds and Total Recall have not been kind to the Red Planet: exploding eyeballs, nasty creatures, all the bad red lighting. But for adventurous travelers who want to try their luck at a one-way trip to Mars, a Dutch non-profit called Mars One is currently taking applications.
The company has already reportedly received 1,000 applicants and will select four future colonists for its 2023 trip.
They’ve posted a checklist of Mars travel qualifications here and a lot of well-known Sci Fi characters probably wouldn’t make the cut. Qualifications include:
* Your trust is built upon good judgment.
* You know your boundaries, and how/when to extend them.
* You are transferring knowledge to others, not simply showcasing what you know or what others do not.
Mars One plans to film the whole process as a “global, televised program” — in essence, the most extreme reality TV show the universe has ever seen. And with Richard Branson‘s Virgin Galactic set to launch some time this year, the future of television could be in outerspace. Just think of the possibilities: Survivor: Pluto. Jersey Shore Goes to Uranus. The new dating show Men Are On Mars, Women Are On Venus.
Of course, there’s just one downside to the Mars One trip (besides the whole “you could die” thing): training will last for 10 incredibly long years. In other words, it would be wise to have an escape plan.
