Move Aside Vampires & Zombies, Witches Are the New TV Trend

American Horror Story CovenFX

For the past couple years, vampires and zombies have been the coolest baddies in Hollywood. But now — at least, on television — the witches are taking over, and we’re totally okay with that.

Lifetime’s new series Witches of East End is a bit like a grown up version of Charmed and it’s a standard guilty pleasure show. Then of course, the new season of American Horror Story: Coven, is all about witches. It seems the execs at CBS are taking note of the trend and jumping on the bandwagon by rebooting Charmed. (Not the most original witchy idea, but it’s something.)

Even the CW’s The Originals — which is supposed to be a vamp series — has a lot of witches in the main cast of characters. Although, let’s be honest, if The Originals was only about vampires, we’d be totally bored. The vampire thing is over: the Twilight series ended and True Blood is on its last legs (they’re adding zombies next season, so you know they’re running out of ideas.) Zombies, as well, have been overdone in movies: Zombieland, Warm Bodies, and World War Z, just to name a few. Plus The Walking Dead has cornered the undead market on TV.

Maybe witches aren’t necessarily a new concept, but at least it’s something different from what we’ve seen in the past few years. Besides, isn’t everyone a little sick of vampires and zombies? We sure are.
