Muriel’s Wedding being made into a musical

Muriel’s Wedding is being made into a stage musical.
Global Creatures and Sydney Theatre Company have partnered to produce Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, which will premiere at Roslyn Packer Theatre in Sydney, Australia from 6 November until 30 December next year (17).
The production is being adapted from the 1994 Australian comedy-drama which starred Toni Collette as Muriel Heslop, the ABBA-loving romantic who dreams of the perfect wedding, despite never having gone on a date. The film’s original screenwriter and director, PJ Hogan, will write the musical’s book, giving the story a contemporary update for its stage debut.
“In Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, Muriel Heslop is back! And this time she’s singing,” reads a synopsis of the musical. “Stuck in a dead-end life in Porpoise Spit, Muriel dreams of the perfect wedding – the white dress, the church, the attention. Unfortunately, there’s one thing missing. A groom. Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted – a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers. That’s when things start to go really wrong.”
The musical’s score will feature songs by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson originally written for ABBA, as well as original tunes by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.
Simon Phillips, who helmed the stage musical adaptation of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, will direct the project, with Gabriela Tylesova in charge of the set and costumes.
Kip Williams, Interim Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company, said the group was thrilled to be reinventing one of Australia’s “greatest cinematic gifts”.
“This will be a fantastic opportunity for STC to revisit a much-loved form of theatre, the musical,” he said.
