Let’s just be honest, the various categories on Netflix could use a little help. Though the streaming service has done a fantastic job with the addition of individual profiles, some of their recommendations for us are often way off the mark. (Honestly, just because we watched Legally Blonde doesn’t mean we want to watch Bratz.) As the weather continues to get more frigid, there would be no better time than now to add a bit of holiday spice to the rather dry Netflix categories. Here are 9 Netflix holiday categories that need to exist.
For Nostalgia’s Sake: Childhood Holiday Flicks
Though we love newer holiday films like Elf, we’re still obsessed with our holiday movies from the ’80s and ’90s. There is nothing better than the holiday films we watched as kids like A Christmas Story, The Preacher’s Wife and Home Alone. Netflix should definitely poll millennials for favorite holiday flicks and create a section that includes the top picks. Trust us, if this category existed we wouldn’t leave the house all winter.
Snow Day All Day!
We all relish those epic mornings when we arise only to discover that school and work are canceled. Those are the perfect days to remain snuggled under the covers with Netflix. There is no need to stick to snowy flicks on wintry days. “Snow Day All Day” is the prefect category for films like Die Hard, The Entire Harry Potter Saga, and Mean Girls.
Classic Christmas Throwbacks
Though our classic films might only be a few decades old, the real holiday classics are films from the 1940s and ’50s like White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Miracle on 34th Street. You might be embarrassed that you’ve never seen these epics, but that’s the beauty of Netflix. If they put all of these flicks in one category, you could get through them all in no time at all.
Cuffing Season: For the Lovers
Winter is a time for couples and cuddles. After a steamy hot summer, what is better than cuddling up with your boo and some lovey-dovey flicks. You could go with a a holiday gem like Love Actually, or something completely different like Blue is the Warmest Color or The Notebook. Forget Netflix and chill, there would be month long sessions of ‘Tis the season and chill.
Stocking Stuffers: For Binge Watching
With all of the amazing television that’s out these days, it’s super hard to keep up with everything. We know you’re probably sick of your friends badgering you to watch shows like Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad so a stocking stuffers section for binge watching epic TV would be the perfect category for Netflix.
Feeling Grinchy?
We know that the holidays aren’t the most magical time of year for everyone. When things start to get a bit too festive feel free to embrace your grinchyness. A Netflix Grinch category should include films like Bad Santa, Trading Places, Scrooged, Gremlins and of course Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. There is nothing wrong with your brain being full or spiders and having garlic in your soul.
When You’re Being Naughty, Not Nice: Films You’re Ashamed To Be Watching
There is a reason why human beings aren’t mind readers, we’d never leave our homes if that was the case. Luckily, we can keep most of our dark and dirty secrets to ourselves. Unfortunately, our Netflix viewing habits are all out in the open for anyone who shares our password to see. Netflix definitely needs to create a secret hidden category for all the films you’re too ashamed to admit you’ve been watching. This category would be the perfect place for movies like Beauty and the Briefcase, The Interview and Christmas with the Kranks.
Needing A Snooze
Sometimes on a dark winter day, all you need is a good 12-hour nap. If you choose to drift in and out of sleep for a entire day, then you need to turn on some shows that won’t force you to remain completely alert in order to enjoy them. This would be the perfect category for shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Office and Friends.
Docs Ain’t Easy
Documentaries are amazing. They truly enlighten the viewer, and give us something to talk that digs a bit deeper than pop-culture. However, it can be hard to settle into a documentary when all you want to do is relax. Sill, the holidays are a good time to get some knowledge while you’re taking a break. Films like American Promise, Vaccines: Calling the Shots and Street Food Around the World would be perfect for this category.
