Timone and Pumbaa, Ursula, Hedes — there have been long-standing rumors about the sexuality of major characters in certain Disney-Pixar films, but Disney has famously shied away from controversy. What most of those characters have in common is that they’re relatively sexless. They’re not human; they’re completely fantastical; can Ursula even reproduce?
However, a brand new trailer for Finding Dory has revealed what appears to be the first actual lesbian couple in a Disney-Pixar film – and they’re totally human.
The scene, which happens about a minute into the trailer, shows a toddler who drops her sippy cup. Two women stand over the stroller, and one picks up the sippy cup and says, “Poor baby, let me get that for you.”
The seconds-long snip caused a social media uproar, with many praising Disney for showcasing families with same sex parents.
Boycotting #FindingDory for a scene POSSIBLY having a lesbian couple is like boycotting a movie in the 60’s w/a MIXED RACE couple! Dumb! 😡💯😕

The trailer originally premiered on The Ellen Show, and Ellen DeGeneres, who famously came out as a lesbian in 1997, voices the lead character, Dory.

This news comes a week after LGBT activists lobbied to make Elsa from Frozen, the highest grossing animated film ever, a lesbian in the sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa, said she supported the movement which ended up trending on twitter with the hashtag #giveelsaagirlfriend.
Finding Dory hits theaters on Friday, June 17.
