Oscar 2001 Fashion Feedback

What the stars wear on the red carpet is such a hot topic, entire television programs are devoted to it (really, how else would Joan Rivers find gainful employment?). We wrote one measly story and received a barrage of e-mail from people agreeing, disagreeing, or… well, we don’t know, exactly. Here are a select few reader responses to our Academy Awards fashion hits and misses roundup, along with a few select editor’s notes responding to those responses.

How J. Lo Can You Go?

Melanie Masi: When is Jennifer Lopez going to get it? Hollywood may be all for everything that is risqué, but when these stars are presenters or in whatever capacity the Academy has placed them, they want elegance–not an exhibitionist. If Jennifer reads this (and feel free to forward it), “Your goodies are for your significant other, not the world –get demure next time.”

Erika Merchan, Portland, Oregon: I would have to say that Jennifer Lopez, once again, stole the show! How this woman does it? Only she knows. Contrary to those who say remarks like “You can always count on Jennifer Lopez for a peep show,” this woman knows how to be sexy and elegant at the same time.

Marci: Love your Web site, and enjoyed the feature on fashions at the Oscars. The pictures of the ladies were especially neat. But a BIG QUESTION. Why didn’t you have pictures of Halle or Jennifer? Both are beautiful. Even though Jennifer’s outfit was a bit much. When viewing it on TV, it was not obvious that her dress was see-through. I thought that it was just too much material. Later, I found out that it was actually too little material. And for Halle, she was showing a lot of cleavage, but what’s new?

[Editor’s note: At some point we did show photos of both lovely ladies. Sometimes the photos are exchanged for new photos to show different people. As for Ms. Lopez, too much seems never to be enough, does it?]

Whoa, Oh, Oh, She’s a Lady

Betty L. Alexius: I thought the gown that Julia Roberts wore was absolutely stunning – she looked so sophisticated. It’s a shame that more women don’t take the hint and dress better.

[Editor’s note: Betcha didn’t know that vintage Valentino was reportedly worth some $40,000, now, did you? However, we wonder if the makers of that gown really intended for it to be worn anywhere there were stairs to climb, like up to the Oscar podium, because Ms. Roberts looked to be having a devil of a time trying to walk in it.]

No Crowe-ing About It

Dave Regan: As for Russell, he dressed more like a 1950s British teddy boy, but I liked his style.

Giving ‘er the Bird

Shelly Moreau, Ottawa, Canada: I thought the most hideous ensemble was — you guessed it — Bjork‘s bird thingy. What an ugly (I mean three-bag ugly) item. And those legs… well, don’t get me started. Perhaps her dress should have been an ugly duckling. That way, maybe we would hope that some day she would be a beautiful swan. She could ditch the one hanging on her neck for something more tasteful and graceful. Yes. I’m nasty in my comments, but really, what kind of statement was she attempting? I read: “I’m tacky, and have no taste and don’t care how I look in front of millions.” I guess it’s great to have that kind of attitude. But really…I stared in amazement with my jaw dropped during her whole performance. Yeesh!!!

Jill: Bjork is interesting. She is always wearing something different and shocking. But it always looks great. She is an individual, which is good. Plus, how would you know what is in? I don’t think Kate Hudson‘s dress was that bad. It can’t be bad, it was made by Stella McCartney.

[Editor’s note: Sometimes you can get by without a little help from your friends. No matter how you feel about Bjork, you’ve got to give her credit for attempting that dress, made specially for her by a pal (“Squawk!”). Perhaps Ms. Hudson’s dress was self-referential (her Almost Famous character Penny Lane = name of Beatles song = Paul McCartney‘s daughter … get it?).]

And from the Peanut Gallery…
