The Reader

“I think it’s really hard now for young actresses in their twenties. They’re expected to run before they can walk. God forbid they should have a failure in their first one or two movies, because what happens to them then? It’s harder now to get in the game and stay in it. I look at someone like Meryl Streep, and I think, ‘Yeah. Thank God we’ve got her to look up to!’”

“I’m a pretty young guy, but I’ve been doing this for a while. I started young. About 10 or 15 years ago I got a letter from a guy named Michael Shannon who’s an actor who lives in England. He said, ‘I’ve started to see your name popping up here and there and you really need to change your name. I’m Michael Shannon and I was here first. If you don’t change your name I can make your life very difficult.’ So I’m just glad I’ve gotten to the point that I can write him back and say, ‘You can’t intimidate me.’”
