Hailee Steinfeld literally came out of nowhere in late 2009 to win the role of Mattie Ross in the Coen Bros. Western epic True Grit, beating out tested youngsters who had proven themselves to producers and audiences. Since getting an Oscar nomination for her work on the film, it was only a matter of time before the studios started knocking at her door with lucrative offers for high-profile projects. She’s staying in the Paramount fold (the company that cast in her in her film debut) as Deadline reports that she’s just accepted a starring role in Forgotten, a new thriller from producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
Based on a novel by Cat Patrick that will be published in June, the story follows 16-year old London Lane whose memory is erased at 4:33 every night. The following morning, all she can remember are events from her future. After meeting a new boy at school, London becomes frustrated that she can’t seem to find him in her memory of things to come.
We’ve got nothing else to judge 14-year old Steinfeld on other than True Grit, which she was excellent in. But that was a very specific role with built in mannerisms and traits. Even though Forgotten is based on pre-existing material (sort of; the source claims that author Patrick is “crafting” the book as a vehicle for the young starlet), she will have to help create the character this time around, a task that presents an entirely different set of challenges. I’ve got all the faith in the world in her abilities, but a lot is riding on this sophomore effort. I eagerly await more news…
