There are few directors that deal with emotional trauma quite like Park Chan-wook. The director, responsible for “The Vengeance Trilogy” — comprised of the modern classic Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance — is widely considered to be one of international cinema’s best filmmakers. And now, Chan-wook is looking to make his first English-language film, featuring Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster.
According to the LA Times blog 24 Frames, who cite two people “familiar with the situation,” Chan-wook is in talks to direct the upcoming film Stoker, produced by Ridley and Tony Scott. The film centers on a young woman (presumably Mulligan) whose crazy uncle comes back to life after her father’s death.
Although Chan-wook has never made an English-language film and the jump may be a little odd at first (typical language and culture barriers), I have no doubt he’ll be able to handle it. Back in 2004, Oldboy won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival (which obviously draws critics from all over the world). Talent and ability transcends language. He understands how emotions work — how people think and react to situations — and he’s proven his ability to illustrate that on the screen.
