Aside from its all-star cast and renowned auteur director, the major selling point for this year’s The Master was an element of filmmaking that often goes unrecognized by the casual moviegoer: the film stock.
Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) shot his religious drama on the large format 70mm, a type of film normally reserved for epics that demand the wide frame scope, like Lawrence of Arabia or 2001: A Space Odyssey. Anderson utilized the stock to amplify the performances of his two leads, Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, pushing the camera in tight on their faces so the audience could see every twitch of the mouth, every piercing glance from the eyes. It’s a thrilling technique… and one that may have been a cumbersome environment for the performers.
In this exclusive clip from The Master Q&A conducted for EPIX and LA Times’ Envelope Screening Series, Anderson recounts working with the giant rig that opened up that brought his breathtaking film to life. Apparently Hoffman wasn’t a big fan:
