Pete St. John is an image advisor to powerful and sometimes dishonest politicians. He is reluctantly working on the campaign of conservative industrialist Jerome Cade who is running for the Senate seat once held by Pete's friend Sam Hastings. Before long, Pete is butting heads with Cade's public relations expert Arnold Billing. Pete's investigation into Cade's background has prompted Billing retaliate in several destructive ways and leads Pete to think Billings knows something sinister about Cade, and perhaps the reason why Hastings is vacating his Senate seat.
