11 Real-Life Mother-Daughter Co-Stars

Like mother, like daughter. Meryl Streep and her daughter Mamie Gummer are teaming up on screen to play – what else? – mother and daughter in the Diablo Cody-written dramedy Ricki and the Flash (out Friday, August 7). Their resemblance is so strong that they once even played the same person. In the 2007 movie Evening, Mamie played the younger version of Meryl’s character. Their Ricki and the Flash roles got us thinking about other mother-daughter duos that have shared the screen together. Here are some of our favorites!

1. Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt in Maleficent

Vivienne was completely adorable as a young Aurora in Maleficent. We’re impressed she was brave enough to face her mom in that scary costume.

2. Leslie Mann and Maude and Iris Apatow in This is 40

Maude and Iris, Leslie’s kids with director Judd Apatow, also appeared in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The family that makes movies together, stays together.

3. Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow in Sylvia

Their resemblance is striking, so it was a no-brainer that Blythe would play Aurelia Plath, Sylvia Plath’s mother, in 2003’s Sylvia. It was the first movie in which Blythe and Gwyneth played mother and daughter.

4. Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri Martino in The Banger Sisters

It was awesome when Susan and Eva shared the screen in The Banger Sisters – but it would have been even better if Kate Hudson had joined her mom Goldie Hawn in the movie, as well. Eva also played the younger version of Susan’s character in the Lifetime mini-series The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.

5. Laurie Simmons and Lena Dunham in Tiny Furniture

It was a film loosely based on her life, so Lena cast her real mom as her on-screen mom. She also cast her real sister as her on-screen sister and her real best friend (Jemima Kirke) as her on-screen best friend. It pays to be the director.

6. Natasha Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave in Evening

Meryl and Mamie weren’t the only real-life mother-daughter duo to appear in Evening. The late Natasha Richardson and her mom Vanessa Redgrave did it, too.

7. Demi Moore and Rumer Willis in Striptease

They played mother and daughter in 1996’s Striptease, but now the two could probably play sisters!

8. Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland in The Good Old Summertime

Liza’s first ever screen appearance was in this 1949 musical playing the daughter of her real-life mom, the legendary Judy Garland.

9. Diane Ladd and Laura Dern

Making movies is basically an average mother-daughter bonding experience for these two. They’ve appeared in a total of nine films together, including Wild at Heart, Citizen Ruth and Daddy and Them, and in the HBO show Enlightened. They even both earned Oscar nominations for their roles in 1991’s Rambling Rose – Laura for best actress and Diana for best supporting actress.

10. Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson in Crazy in Alabama

Before she was makin’ mama proud in Fifty Shades of Grey, Dakota joined her mom on screen in 1999’s Crazy in Alabama. She and her sister played Melanie’s daughters in the film.

11. Jada Pinkett-Smith and Willow Smith in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

So they didn’t exactly appear on screen together, but they did work on the same movie. Both Jada and Willow voiced characters in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
