It’s official. After many headaches and delays, Red Sonja has a director. According to an Empire Magazine interview with Drive Angry and Red Sonja producer Avi Lerner, Simon West — best known for Con Air and this month’s The Mechanic — will take the reigns of the project. But also — and geeks, get ready to pass out — Lerner wants Amber Heard to play Red Sonja. Schwing!
However, Lerner admitted in the interview that despite West being locked, he still hasn’t officially signed Heard.
“We’re talking to a few girls for the role of Sonja, but we just finished a movie called Drive Angry with Amber Heard, and I want to see her,” he said. “She’s my favorite for the role. …Amber is the new Red Sonja… but she doesn’t know it yet!”
Beyond that slightly creepy but very exciting quote, Lerner — who’s also producing the Conan the Barbarian 3D reboot — revealed that Red Sonja will go into production “between Conan and Conan 2,” so according to our timeline, since Conan hits theaters on August 19, that should be sometime within this year. Regardless, one thing is certain; they need to get into production before the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
