Renee Elise Goldsberry departing Hamilton for Netflix sci-fi series

Actress Renee Elise Goldsberry is leaving Broadway blockbuster Hamilton to star in a new sci-fi drama on Netflix.
The star, who won a Tony Award last month (Jun16) for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in the historical hip-hop musical, will be taking her final bow this autumn (16).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsberry will be making the move from America’s revolutionary era to the 25th century in a 10-episode series titled Altered Carbon. She will play a rebellion leader and master strategist in a world where people can digitally store their personalities and upload them into a new body if their current body dies.
The Good Wife alum is set to star opposite leading man Joel Kinnaman in Altered Carbon, which is based on author Richard Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name. Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis will write, executive produce and serve as showrunner.
Ironically, Goldsberry’s former Hamilton co-star Jonathan Groff left the production earlier this year (16) also in favour of another new Netflix series called Mindhunter, led by David Fincher.
Just before news of Goldsberry’s departure, it was revealed Daveed Diggs, also a Tony winner for his performance as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, will be leaving the show as well.
Diggs’ last performance will be on Friday (15Jul16), nearly a week after other principal cast members, Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda said their final goodbyes on Saturday (09Jul16).
Replacements for both Goldsberry and Diggs have yet to be announced.
