Rooney Mara will prove, in the very near future, that she is an actress of infinite capability. Right now, she might be more or less synonymous with Lisbeth Salander, her The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo character (for which she has earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination). Prior to her brief but potent role in 2010’s prodigious The Social Network, Mara wasn’t too familiar a name. But the actress has chosen her next part with ample caution in order to best develop her talents and earn an interminable space in America’s admirationarium. Mara has signed on to star in Steven Soderbergh’s The Side Effects.
Mara will be taking the role formerly occupied by Blake Lively. The existing cast includes Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jude Law. Mara will play a young woman who becomes dependent on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills to combat the overwhelming emotional experience she is undergoing as a result of her clearly threatening husband’s release from prison.
The role is surely a heavy one, and will likely land Mara somewhere in between the uncharismatic, robotic Lisbeth Salander and the twenty-words a second Boston University student Erica Albright, whom she portrayed in Social Network. Fans of Mara from these or any of her other films (Tanner Hall, Youth in Revolt, A Nightmare on Elm Street) are likely optimistic for this next starring turn for the talented actress. As well they should be. A future with more Mara is the future we should want for our children.
