Sometime along the timeframe of the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, the thought process went away from “cool guys with nice cars” to now “cool guys with amazing cars and unbelievable stunts that probably wouldn’t be possible”.
Now enter the spinoff ‘Hobbs & Shaw’, where the thought process is “two cool guys have to take down a cyber-human. Oh, they still have crazy awesome cars”.
The story goes like this, Brixton (Idris Elba) has gone through a process where he is cyber-enhanced. Bulletproof and superhuman. If the dude could fly he’d be Superman, but he’s the bad guy, so he needs to be taken down. The government thinks it would be a great idea to get the best people in the business so they get Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), a guns blazing, maybe rockets too, punch em and ask questions later kind of guy, and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) the rogue agent who does whatever he needs to get the job done. The two know each other and don’t like each other, but Brixton is too much for one of them so they need to work together, or else the world will probably blow up or something.
I don’t know what Brixton’s plan is, but that probably doesn’t matter. This film’s got so much action and that’s what matters.
‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ releases August 2, 2019.
