Thursday morning introduced early risers to the nominees who’ll be contending for golden statues come this year’s Oscars ceremony, but it also introduced the country to the sort of spectacle it should expect from forthcoming host, Seth MacFarlane. The Family Guy creator and Ted writer/director, who’ll be delivering the award show on Feb. 24, announced the nominations for the 85th Annual Academy Awards alongside actress Emma Stone — and as a treat to all those devoted souls who set their alarms early enough to catch the presentation (or still hadn’t gone to bed), the endeavor was not only informative, it was entertaining.
With all the colloquial back and forth about how MacFarlane will fare as Oscars host, Thursday morning’s announcements can act as a sneak preview of sorts. MacFarlane peppered the special with jokes about his show business contemporaries, about the nature of some of the categories, and, oddly, about Hitler. So, if you like pop culture references and good ol’ Hitler jokes, this is the Oscars for you!
Here are a few of MacFarlane’s funniest quips from the performance. Cast your vote below on how you’ll think he’ll do when the big day arrives!
The Celebrity Jabs
(Congratulating each of the Best Actress nominees) “You no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.”
(Commenting on Argo‘s Best Picture nomination) “Someone tell [Bryan] Cranston he can unclench his teeth now.”
The Goofy Industry Quip
(Describing the Best Adapted Screenplay category) “The writers basically just copied stuff from Microsoft Words and pasted it into Final Draft.”
The Self-Directed Gag
(On his own nomination for Best Original Song for Ted) “I guess I’m going to the Oscars now.”
The Hitler Joke
(Referring to Amour) “The last time Austria and Germany got together and co-produced something, it was Hitler… but this is much better.”
