Shailene Woodley is not happy about what’s happening with the last film in the Divergent series. Actually, she’s straight up confused and not sure if she should reprise her role.
Divergent had a great start in theaters and was touted as the next Hunger Games, but after Insurgent’s mediocre performance and Allegiant’s awful box office run, the series has obviously lost some steam. Now, Lionsgate isn’t sure if the fourth and final installment of the series, Ascendant, will even debut in theaters. The company planned to make the final film a TV movie and continue the story of The Divergent Series with a TV series.
Unfortunately, this is not what the stars signed on for, and Shailene Woodley is not thrilled with the prospect of starring in another TV show (let’s not forget her start on the pretty embarrassing Secret Life Of The American Teenager — though we definitely still watched it despite it’s shortcomings). Recently the star spoke to E! News about the upcoming film.
“From what I know, they want to proceed with a television show, which is not something that I signed up to do,” she said. “Out of respect to the whole scenario, there could be things that have changed, but I didn’t sign up to do a TV show.”
This mimics the sentiment of her co-star Miles Teller, who basically said the same thing. Still, none of the cast know exactly what’s happening and Woodley has since clarified her statements. During a recent interview for her movie Snowden, the actress admitted:
“They haven’t finalized any decisions, so it’s actually a moot point to talk about it now, out of respect to Lionsgate and everyone involved. I’m not exactly sure where they stand so we are kind of all in a limbo game. I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris [the protagonist in the franchise based on Veronica Roth’s novels], and I would love to be able to do that. Nothing would make me happier.”
Unfortunately The Divergent Series: Allegiant had universally dismal reviews and only brought in $179 million worldwide. The budget has already been reduced for The Divergent Series: Ascendant, but that’s not the only hit the franchise has taken. Robert Schwentke, who directed the second and third installment, has left the series. If Woodley and Teller don’t reprise their roles, the film has little hope.
On the other hand, a TV series could be really awesome. If it falls in vein with The 100, we’d be totally on board.
