Shanghai Ghetto | 2002
A documentary about Jewish refugees who escaped Nazi persecution to the only place that was open to them - Shanghai, China. The film follows five subjects on their passage from Nazi Germany to Japanese occupied Shanghai, where they arrived penniless and unprepared for life in the Far East. The story is told through interviews with survivors and historians, letters and photos, as well as rare archival footage. The chronicle explores the refugees relationships with the Chinese and the occupying Japanese forces; the attempts of the American Jewish community to help their brethren, and the rich cultural life that was created out of extreme hardships and tragedy.
