Monica Cord is a socialite who is researching a book about the homeless by observing men at the rescue mission in downtown Los Angeles. After becoming interested a one man called John D , she secretly searches his junkyard trailer and finds it filled with handwritten manuscripts. Believing them to have merit, Monica takes a sample to a book critic friend who agrees that the work is outstanding. But when Monica offers John a place in her home to live and work, he sets the manuscript on fire, preferring to live in solitude with only the company of a few homeless friends. However, when John learns that one of them is pregnant, he convinces her to keep her baby and promises that he will work at Monica's house in order to make money to support the child.
