Full disclosure, I read the book and I couldn’t be more excited for this film.
In 2044 society is overpopulated and crumbling, and the only escape for many is an online world called the OASIS. Developed by James Halliday (Mark Rylance) the world is full of things from various video games, movies, tv, and more from the 80s. After Halliday passed away it was announced that he’s hidden an easter egg and whoever finds it is the sole successor to Halliday (very Willy Wonka I know). Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is one of the people looking and after many years it was thought to be impossible, that is until one day he finds the first step. Now it’s a rush between Watts, the other Gunters, and the IOI lead by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) to win the game.
Like I said in the titles the book and film are filled with references to the various movie, tv, anime, and video game characters. In just the trailer the likes of Iron Giant, Voltron, Chuckie, The Delorean from Back to the Future, Harley Quinn, Tracer from Overwatch, Laura Croft, Chun-Li, Battletoads, Gundam, King Kong, the Mach 5 from speed racer, the ATeam van, and many more.
Whoever got the rights deserve a raise.
