Sony Is Going To Make A Live-Action ‘Mulan’

With all the buzz surrounding the live-action Beauty And The Beast (is Emma Watson not the perfect Belle?), Sony is trying to cash in on the live-action reboot trend.

The strong, powerful Disney princess Mulan is getting her own live-action reboot — and we couldn’t be more excited!

There’s not much word on what exactly the live-action Mulan will have in store other than it’s filming in China with a mostly Chinese cast (thank you Sony for not trying to white wash another Disney princess).

The film is being partially financed by ex-Sony executive Doug Belgrad, who’s financially backing a bunch of films including Bad Boys 3, Peter Rabbit and Adventureland 2. The investments come through Belgrad’s company 2.0 Entertainment.

Last year, Disney was mulling over the prospect of a live-action Mulan produced by Chris Bender and J.C. Spink, who are best known for their work on American Pie and We’re The Millers. It seems like a strange combination: a powerful tale of a young girl trying to save her family and nation vs. a group of dudes trying to bang their way through senior year. It’s probably for the best that it never ended up happening, but Sony’s version seems promising.

It’s been almost 20 years since the original Mulan hit theaters. The wildly successful animated film pulled in $300 million worldwide.
