Synopsis

"Sound and Fury" investigates a debate that is raging within deaf communities all over the globe: cochlear implants. As the latest in medical technology this procedure can cure deafness in newborn babies -- but will it also mean the end of American Sign Language and deaf culture by dividing the deaf community between those who champion the implants and those who feel it is a crude medical procedure? This documentary explores this seemingly irreconcilable conflict as it illuminates the ongoing struggle for identity among deaf people today.
