Whitney HoustonIt’d be dishonest to say that the posthumous presence of a deceased actor, especially one with as huge a name as Whitney Houston, doesn’t make a film more interesting to people. As tragic as these situations are, much of The Dark Knight‘s unbelievable box office must be attributed Heath Ledger’s death, as would a good deal of the influence of Peter Graves‘ character in the classic Network. The first trailer for the upcoming musical film Sparkle has released, showing the world the final movie role of actress/singer Houston prior to her sudden passing in February.

Beyond outside influences, Sparkle does appear to offer a gripping story on its own. The trailer is backed by an energetic number performed by Cee Lo Green (in character as a singer named “Black”), while stars Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, and Houston depict elements of the rise to fame, family in-fights, romance, trauma… the movie seems to pack a whole lot in the department of emotional experience. Fans may be coaxed by the idea of paying tribute to the much beloved Houston and basking in her final contribution to the big screen, but it looks as though the journey of the characters will itself be a moving package.
