Spotlight and Carol land WGA screenplay nominations

Acclaimed films Spotlight and Carol are among the top films up for screenplay prizes at the 2016 Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards.
Officials at the organisation announced their nominees for best theatrical and documentary screenplays on Wednesday (06Jan16), with Carol competing against The Big Short, The Martian, Steve Jobs and Trumbo for the Adapted Screenplay honour, while Spotlight is up for the Original Screenplay prize alongside Sicario, Bridge of Spies, Straight Outta Compton and Trainwreck.
Amy Schumer’s breakout comedy nomination marks the third WGA nod for the comedienne, who scored recognition when the TV categories were announced last month (Dec15).
Schumer is also nominated for Comedy/Variety Sketch Series for her show Inside Amy Schumer, and Comedy/Variety Specials for her stand-up comedy programme Amy Schumer: Live at The Apollo.
The final screenplay category announced features the year’s best documentaries, with Being Canadian, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and Prophet’s Prey up for the prize.
The winners will be unveiled during simultaneous WGA ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York on 13 February (16).
