Squeeze comeback inspired by comedy memoir

Squeeze stars Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford were inspired to release their first album of new material in 17 years after dreaming up a musical based on a U.K. comedy writer’s memoir.
The British songwriters had not put out any new tracks since 1998 album Domino when Glenn read the 2012 autobiography of radio presenter/writer Danny Baker while sick in bed.
The two men grew up in the same area of south London and had similar childhoods, and Glenn decided to start work on a stage show based on the book.
However, when he contacted Danny about the idea he was informed the memoir was already being made into a TV sitcom, and Glenn and Chris got together to write the theme tune which went on to form the backbone of their 2015 album Cradle to the Grave.
Glenn tells Mojo magazine, “I was ill in bed, got Danny’s book, and read it one afternoon. We had identical backgrounds, and shared that post-Second World War austerity. I called Danny up and told him, We should make a musical out of this. He said, ‘Actually, we’re already working on a TV show, but come along.'”
