Disney Offers Details About ‘Star Wars’ Origin Stories for Han Solo and Boba Fett

When Disney announced its mission statement to never let the world go another summer without a Star Wars movie, we presumed that some of the standalone character features would take the form of origin stories. The likes of Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Yoda would be given the treatment, among — as we heard in CEO Bob Iger’s chat with CNBC (courtesy of Indiewire) — other “great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga.” Additionally, Disney has let loose a few more bits of info, regarding the specifics of one particular Millennium Falcon pilot’s independent venture.

Indiewire adds particulars about Solo’s standalone film, which will take place between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars picture, wherein Han was introduced. This would likely consolidate Han’s camaraderie with Chewbacca, business dealings with Jabba the Hutt, fair weather friendship with Lando Calrissian, and maybe even that infamous 12-parsec Kessel Run he’s always yammering on about. What’s more, Harrison Ford is said to book-end the story (ostensibly led by a younger actor playing Solo) with some grumblings about how Greedo shot first, or something.

As for the masked bounty hunter and sarlacc delicacy, we’ll see his story take place between either Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Return of the Jedi. What’s more, each origin story will borrow from Disney’s tutilege under Marvel and contribute to the narrative of larger “main series” pieces.

So, there are a few ways to look at this: from the vantage point of those tired of the franchise gambit, disappointed in Disney’s conflation of the Star Wars and Marvel identities by approaching both properties with the same practical philosophies, worried about ret-cons to the histories of age-old beloved characters… or we can go for broke and delight in the fact that we are getting a ton more Star Wars content. To be perfectly honest, either perspective is justifiably valid. I guess we could be swayed toward the latter if they announce a standalone Figrin D’an movie…
