Steven Spielberg doesn’t joke around when it comes to his company Amblin Entertainment. The group is responsible for some of the most iconic children’s films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and The Land Before Time (not to mention our favorite, Men In Black). Amblin Entertainment might be adding another kid-friendly, soon-to-be blockbuster hit to their roster called The Gates.
Last year, Spielberg purchased the rights to The Gates franchise, which is based on a novel by John Connolly. He hired producer Michael DeLuca to oversee the film and writer Blaise Hemingway to adapt the screenplay.
According to Deadline, who broke the news, the first installment follows an 11-year-old boy named Samuel Johnson and an outcast demon. They must stop hell from impeding on Earth after the Hadron Collider (remember how scared we were when that thing was turned on?) rips a hole in the space-time continuum. There are two additional books called The Infernals and The Creeps, so there is plenty of room for sequels.
The Gates is just in the early development stages, so it’s unclear whether or not the new franchise will even make it to the big screen, but with Amblin’s awesome track record, if it does, it will be an instant hit. How creepy and cool does it sound? We’re so excited!
